One Quick Tip for Taking Supplements

As someone who has always been interested in non-prescription remedies, I find myself frequently in discussions about usage of them. When in practice, I earned a certificate in botanical medicine, and learned (although have since mostly forgotten) many of the benefits of herbs and supplements. Relatedly, scientists have researched and long demonstrated the physiological needs for vitamins and minerals, and results of depletion or deficiencies.

There are numerous advantages to these substances. Still, many people tell me about difficulties taking them as oral tablets or capsules. I can’t begin to recount all the discussions I have had about this, and recently the complaint surfaced in two separate conversations with buddies here in Southern Oregon. I realized it was worth a short post.

Friends and others have told me that their difficulty is in either swallowing the products (more commonly noticed) or digesting them. Consider fish oil capsules, which seem gigantic to me. I take less of the Omega-3 element than I would like simply because I have a problem with their size, or more specifically, difficulty gulping them down. Understandably, people report that the dry tablets or capsules seem to get “caught half-way down” as I have heard it described. It can cause hours of discomfort or even gastro upset.

There are some exceptions that appear true for everyone. For example, tinctures are less problematic and often easier to absorb, but also more expensive and clumsy if you have to deal with half a dozen or more bottles. Secondly, there are an ever-growing number of chewable products available in “gummy” form. Invitingly, they seem more like enticing, candy substitutes than the choke-inducing alternatives. (There is of course sugar or sweetener in most gummies.) Nevertheless, the capsules and tablets are readily available, and generally most cost-effective.

My tip, and something I always abide by, is to take your supplements during your meal. For me, this is generally breakfast. I don’t simply mean to follow the common advice given for many medications, directing you to “take with food,” which could describe a time right before or after you eat. I suggest ingesting DURING the meal, half-way into finishing your repast, no matter what time of day.

This means the vitamins /minerals/herbs/supplements need to be on your table (or plate). As I take quite a few, I prepare about 10 days’ worth in advance, using pill-holders. Doing it while listing to a book, or radio, or watching TV, I barely notice the chore.

Whether you consider it one tip, or three, consider this…..

  • Have the supplements ready in advance
  • Put them on your table
  • Take them half-way through the meal (DURING it)

I hope this will ease discomfort or pain for you as much as it does for me when taking supplements. In recent times, it has become clear we need to consider what facts we ‘swallow.’ Hopefully, this one will en’capsulate’ good substance for you.
