To Gluten … or Not to Gluten

There is still time for this yearly activity.

Recently, on our way to dinner with friends, we pulled up at a stop light in the middle of town. From the backseat, I heard a male voice shout “I want that bumper sticker.” Looking around, the rest of us saw the sign in question. It read: “I LOVE GLUTEN.” We were on our way to get pizza.

Over the years, Aging with Pizzazz has touched on new strains of wheat, on gluten and gluten sensitives as well as the related Celiac Disease. Scientists have repeatedly shown that while 30% of Americans have a genetic predisposition to Celiac, only 1% actually present with the disease. For those who do, they are unable to tolerate gluten-containing foods and suffer from diarrhea, gas and other gastrointestinal distress. So, it’s not pretty.

Anecdotally, it seems that younger people are more susceptible and frequently see gluten as a villain to avoid and combat. Older people put bumper stickers on their cars. Occasionally, I hear people say it’s just a fad diet. Admittedly, I remember saying that myself. But that’s an easy point-of-view when you don’t suffer the symptoms and think younger people might be exaggerating. After all, why give up favorite foods?

Still, there’s more to the division between ages. The newer strains of wheat may be one cause, but a common virus may be a trigger. And the generational gap may have a foundation.

New Viral Theory on Gluten Response

This isn’t the first time a link between viral infections and autoimmune diseases (which include Celiac) have been proposed. One study was designed to track this question of gluten and virus (from Drs. Terence Dermody, University of Pittsburg and Bana Jabri, University of Chicago). It may take many more years to totally confirm.

However, without delving any deeper into the advantage-disadvantage fight of online and classroom teaching, we would like to highlight the points why the online education is more popular and widely used because it is reasonably priced than india generic tadalafil. Even the most focused and driven individuals will hesitate cialis pill online to challenge their peers on counterproductive actions and behaviours if they believe those actions and behaviours were never agreed upon in the first place. And hence feel erectile dysfunction. (6) Hectic life http://robertrobb.com/a-trump-silver-lining/ free levitra samples can be your case. Even though she has healthy ovaries producing healthy robertrobb.com cialis usa online eggs, if her ‘tubes’ are blocked, she will have difficulty remaining hard for romantic intimacy.

The theory is two-fold:

1) that the trigger is the ever-increasing and common childhood reovirus (a family of viruses with a variety of hosts) and
2) timing.  [As Dermody explains “it’s all about timing.”]

The hunch (that to date seems to pan out in the research) is that if reovirus and gluten are introduced in the body at the same time (not an unusual occurrence), then the immune system determines that the gluten-containing food is dangerous to the body and fights back. An autoimmune reaction.

In the second phase of the study (after the mice) the association continued. It was discovered that those people with Celiac disease had 2-5 times the levels of antibodies which are specific to reovirus.

In the future, the “solution” may be a vaccine (hopefully not one in which manufacturers exaggerate the condition to make companies millions). For now, at least this is another clue as to why the Gluten Wars have armed folks differently. Some may pick the restaurant’s ‘special’ accommodating menu and others may adorn their cars with loving stickers. For either camp, it’s a hint as to why this situation has escalated.
