Someplace We Call Home (Mini Post)

I have a peculiar habit. Perhaps more than one, but this particular reference is about saying “let’s go home.” What’s strange is that I use the phrase when I simply want to return to wherever I am sleeping that evening – luxurious hotel, friend’s abode or a camping hovel. No difference.

My mother used to describe my behavior with the old adage “anywhere you hang your hat is home.” It wasn’t a compliment. She found my ability to be comfortable elsewhere as insulting. I understood her sentiment. Similarly, she felt that only your home town could truly be home. I believe it’s more complicated.

I have recently returned from a 2+ week trip to Iceland. A rather exotic place by most standards. Aside from museums, we visited geysers, glaciers, hot thermal pools, lagoons, black-sand beaches, icebergs and waterfalls (‘foss’) too abundant to recount. Game of Thrones fans would feel right at home with the cliffs, cervices and crags so copious and unusual. [I fear hate-mail for admitting it, but I’m not a ‘GOT’ fan due to the gore. Content yourself to figure there’s always one who just ‘doesn’t get it.’] Iceland’s beauty is legendary, although my husband (jokingly) claims the scenery is all done with computer aided graphics. It’s just THAT amazing.

Yet, this is not a travel log. Instead it’s a comment on returning home. “Glad to get home” is an expression I hear myself (and my husband) repeat numerous times as any trip is ending.

The feeling of returning to a home space is comforting. I write often about health issues in general – a lot about the physical: diseases, stress-management, tests, health care, diet, exercise, natural (or not) medicines, etc. Still, I rather believe it is the ethereal: love, friends, community, family, attitude and purpose that play a far greater role in our health and quality aging.

One major key to longevity is to love that special space we occupy on a daily basis. Even if it never reaches “perfection,” it’s somewhere we call home. Our situations are different – childhood towns or relocating as a new adventure. Other aspects vary as well: standard of housing, single homes, assisted living, apartments and anywhere in size from tiny homes to McMansions. We may live alone or with a loved one, have pets, take part in the community, find friends in the neighborhood, by phone, or in virtual neighborhoods on our computer while surrounded by well-known stuff. Whether we consciously ‘choose’ our situation or not, we need to avoid any feelings of dread, and instead ensure a welcoming warmth. It’s essential to return to that dwelling with a sense of well-being.

It may not seem like it is the top of a healthy living list, but the comfort and peace it can bring may enhance our joy and extend our years. I remind myself that working to make certain it offers what we need is part of health care. No one can describe it for us, or even account for why it’s special to us. ‘Home’ is simply in the heart. It’s a benefit in life and, while unique to each of us, is still someplace WE all call by that designation ‘home.’

And to all who travel…. happy trails and welcome home!
