Gift to Myself — the Best Gift of All

Short Post

In our culture, when December rolls around, the thought of “gifts” is typically close behind. Despite mutual lamenting over commercialism and merchandizing of the season, concentration on gifts is the common focus. So December is here, and keeping with the unlikeable tradition, I have a gift planned for myself.

One of the best gifts of all is TIME. But it’s hard to magically conjure up extra – even while it is everlasting. Without delving into the physical mechanisms of time, I just crave more of it to enjoy. That’s the difficult part to manage, having more ‘down time’ in our busy lives. It’s a challenge for sure, but a valuable aspiration. Pondering this, it occurred to me how important that extra personal time is when striving to Age with Pizzazz.

As a role model (gee, I don’t think I’ve ever been a role model before), I am making December a ‘lite’ month at AgingWithPizzazz. [This post is short, and I’m skipping mid-month.] I hope to enjoy the breathing room away from a commitment.

That is my gift to myself this holiday season. How about you? Can you pick one typical chore in your life that you can lighten up on just a bit? Step away from efforts at perfection or obligation and just goof-off a tad? Don’t let it just slip by unnoticed either. After selecting something to avoid, make certain to consciously enjoy the time pursuing your relished activity.

  1. I also like the dreamy folk song, “Who Knows Where the Time Goes.” – Judy Collins, 1968. (That shows my age)
Since I am also fearing the unknown (Alzheimer’s), I am making a systematic routine (memorizing, rehersing body language) for certain specific list – and my time is one of them.
I suppose I am now “measuring out my life with coffee spoons” like Prufrock, but it helps me notice how I allocate a block, on purpose, for random ADD and allow flexibility anyway. Leisure.
